    The mission of the AAWD is to be the leading resource for advancing, connecting, and enriching the lives of women dentists.
     

    We do this by offering our members a variety of programs and services that benefit the special needs of the busy female dental student.

     

    We want to create a network of women who are willing to support each other and grow together.

     

    We want to learn from the best in our business and pay it forward to the younger generations.

     

    We want to make each other better and celebrate women in dentistry.

    President,

    Kristan Rodriguez

    A wild Alaskan at heart, Kristan was raised camping and fishing in the true outdoors. She met her husband right after dental assisting school and started a family without skipping a beat. Two boys later, she juggled working as a dental assistant and being a full time student at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She completed her Bachelors in Biology, and an Associates in General Education. All were grand strides to finally accomplishing her dream of becoming a dentist. She moved to San Antonio with her family, and is now a fourth year dental student at UTHSCSA. She enjoys spending time with her family and new Texas friends, and exploring the Lone Star state and everything it has to offer. She strives to stay active in her community, and to make a difference in the lives she meets.

    Catherine Young

    A Blue Bell Lovin’ girl, Catherine grew up in Brenham, TX and moved to San Antonio once she found out her dental school dreams were coming true. Prior to starting college she was a dental assistant, allowing her to develop a passion for dentistry and everything it is made up of. Catherine went to Texas State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in Biology. She is currently a third year dental student at UTHSCSA. Volunteering in her community and helping in any way she can is something she treasures. In her spare time she loves going to the beach, traveling, and spending time with her family, friends, and two weenie dogs.

    Vice President,

    Nancy Wong

    Nancy grew up in Lima, Peru and moved to Texas when she was thirteen. She has lived in San Antonio for the past 10 years where she attended Tom C. Clark High School and completed a Bachelors degree in Biology and a Master in Business Administration in Business of Health at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Nancy loves volunteering in the community, specially helping children in San Antonio and would love to become the new pediatric dentist in town! In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, taking photos, traveling to new cities and exploring to find the best coffee and desserts around.

    Julia Wiegand

    Julia was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas where she attended Winston Churchill High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and was a student-athlete on the Longhorn women’s tennis team. Julia’s father is an accomplished dentist himself so she has grown up around the field of dentistry. While in college, Julia realized she wanted to help improve people’s first impressions, their smiles, which led her to follow in her father’s footsteps. As her love for dentistry continues to grow, Julia enjoys working on challenging cases and improving the self-confidence for patients of all ages. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, working out, drinking tea, exploring the outdoors, eating sour straws, watching movies, eating dessert, cuddling with her puppies, sunbathing in her backyard and playing the harp.

    Maria Shah

    Maria was born in Karachi, Pakistan, but moved to San Antonio when she was a nine-month-old baby. After graduating from Reagan High School here in San Antonio, she got her bachelor of science in biology at UTSA, then off to dental school! When she’s not studying or stressing about school, she enjoys trying new restaurants and coffee shops for her foodie Instagram, traveling and spending time with family and friends!

    Community Service Chair,

    Holly Ardoin

    This Texas Panhandle girl moved to San Antonio for dental school after receiving her undergraduate degree in biology from Texas Tech University. In her spare time, Holly enjoys spending time with her husband, Jordan, and Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix, Cooper. Holly also enjoys spending time outdoors whether it be snow skiing in Angel Fire, NM or tubing on Lake Brownwood. Community outreach has always been dear to Holly, as she spent numerous hours giving back to communities both locally and globally. She’d love to open a practice with her husband in West Texas and give back to people in that region!

    Social Media Chair,

    Dhea Patel

    This Houstonian moved to San Antonio for dental school after completing her B.S. in Biochemistry at American University in Washington, D.C. Before Dental School, Dhea was able to pursue her interest in theatre, singing, and dance. After school hours, you can find Dhea in dance class, exploring a new coffee shop or restaurant, or traveling.

    Alumni Representative,

    Aalia Farukhi

    Aalia Farukhi is a 3rd year dental student. She was born in LA but raised a Texan. She has lived in H-town for most of her life and moved to San Antonio for dental school. In her free time, Aalia enjoys photography, working out, cooking and watching re-runs of Parks and Recreation.

    Historian,

    Ai Ton

    Texas born and raised, Ai is a firm supporter of Southern hospitality and service and that small gestures can have big impacts. In high school, she put in over 700 volunteer hours at the local hospital. In undergrad at UT Austin where she earned her Bachelors in Marketing, she volunteered with various organizations and participated in a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. She also served 2 years as an officer for UT-China Care, an organization that supports orphans in China as well as adoptees and their families in the Austin area. Now in dental school, Ai has served in philanthropy positions for SA ASDA and AAPHD and loves finding new outlets to connect others for a bigger purpose. In her spare time she likes doing yoga, crafts, cooking, reading, and traveling.

    DS2 Liaison,

    Angela Brost

    Angela grew up in Medford, Wisconsin. She served in the USAF as a Serbian Croatian linguist for 6 years. After the completion of her enlistment, she completed her BS in Dental Hygiene at UTHSCSA. After several international mission trips she decided to further her education in dentistry in hopes of having more to offer her patients. She was recently commissioned back into the USAF and will be practicing dentistry with them following dental school. In her free time she loves to spend time with her friends and family, weave baskets, paint, workout and travel the world.

    Marineé Cabrera

    A native New Yorker, Marineé moved to San Antonio to pursue her dream of dentistry and is now a fourth year dental student at UTHSCSA. Prior to starting dental school, Marinee worked as a product development engineer for a dental implant company where her love for dentistry grew. She received her bachelor's degree in Bioengineering from Lehigh University and her Master's degree in Biomaterials Science from New York University. In her free time, she loves traveling to new places both near and far, reading books about business and the stock market, learning about sports dentistry, and exploring everything Texas has to offer.

    Faculty Advisor,

    Dr. Karen Troendle

    D.D.S., M.P.H.

    Dr. Karen Troendle is a San Antonio native, who was in the fourth graduating class of the UTHSCSA School of Dentistry. Karen entered dental school with the intention of pursuing academics in dentistry as a career, and was offered a teaching position in the Department of Prosthodontics upon graduation. During her tenure with the Health Science Center she has directed numerous courses in several departments. She currently serves as the Director of Direct Restorations for the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. Karen is a member of the Health Science Center’s Academy of Master Teachers, and has been awarded the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor by the University of Texas Board of Regents. Her favorite pastime is to spend time with her two children and three grandchildren.
